Church of S.Maria della Visitazione
Built in the early 13th century as an expansion of the ancient Castle church, the Parish Church of Santa Maria di Subbiano was further enlarged between the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The current bell tower, however, was built in 1875. In the early 20th century, a portico was added in front of the main façade, and in 1947, the church underwent additional restoration, assuming its present appearance.
Inside the oldest part, corresponding to the current Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, you can admire two frescoes from the second half of the 15th century: "Saint Roch" and "Saint Sebastian." These are part of a pictorial cycle attributed to artisans from Arezzo, influenced by the painting style of Piero della Francesca.
In the apse, there is "The Coronation of Mary," and above the entrance, "The Deposition," both painted by Giovanni Bassan, an artist from the 1930s and 1940s. Behind a glass case, there is a 17th-century wooden crucifix with movable arms, considered miraculous and still highly venerated by the faithful of Subbiano. Under the portico stands a marble monument, created by Arnaldo Zocchi, depicting Don Lorenzo Boschi, the benefactor of Subbiano and founder of the homonymous charitable institution (Opera Pia).
